What does a Civil Celebrant do and why should you hire one?

What is a Civil Celebrant in the UK? And Why You Should Consider One for Your Ceremony

Are you planning a wedding, vow renewal, or another significant event? You may have heard the term “civil celebrant,” but what exactly does it mean, and how does it differ from other officiants like humanist celebrants or registrars? In this blog post, we’ll explain the role of a civil celebrant in the UK, what they can do, and why choosing a civil celebrant might be the perfect decision for your special occasion.

What is a Civil Celebrant?

In the UK, a civil celebrant is an officiant who conducts non-religious, non-legal ceremonies. Whether you're celebrating a wedding, naming ceremony, vow renewal, or a commitment ceremony, a civil celebrant offers personalised, meaningful ceremonies tailored to reflect your unique values and beliefs.

Unlike registrars, who are required to follow legal wording, or religious officiants who adhere to specific faith-based traditions, a civil celebrant has complete flexibility. This means we can craft ceremonies that fit your exact wishes, allowing for a more creative, personal experience.

What Can a Civil Celebrant Do?

A civil celebrant can perform a wide range of ceremonies, including:

  • Couples Ceremonies

  • Vow Renewals

  • Naming Ceremonies

  • Commitment Ceremonies

But that’s not all! A celebrant can also create custom ceremonies for unique occasions, such as Transgender Naming Ceremonies or even a Divorce Ceremony where someone reclaims their name. The beauty of working with a celebrant is the flexibility to design a ceremony that reflects your personal journey.

Civil Celebrant vs. Other Officiants

To help you make the right decision for your ceremony, here’s a comparison of the main types of officiants:

  • Registrar – A registrar performs legally-binding ceremonies with set wording and is limited to specific venues like registry offices or approved locations. Simple, traditional and legal, but somewhat limited in terms of personalisation.

  • Religious Officiant – A religious officiant conducts ceremonies within the framework of a particular faith and is bound to its traditions. As with registrars this allows for legal ceremonies, and is traditionally very rich, but has little scope for personalisation.

  • Humanist Celebrant – A non-religious celebrant who creates ceremonies based on humanist values. They are flexible but still incorporate humanist principles. This generally means that they will talk about what humanism is during the ceremony. Perfect if you identify as Humanist, but if you don’t…

  • Civil Celebrant – The most flexible option! A civil celebrant can design a ceremony that reflects your beliefs – religious or not. There are no set rules or wording; it’s all about making the ceremony personal and meaningful. I am, admittedly, a little biased here, but let me tell you some more about it:

Why Choose a Civil Celebrant?

Choosing a civil celebrant for your ceremony gives you complete freedom. Your ceremony will be tailored to reflect your personality, values, and style – without being restricted by legal language or religious doctrine. A celebrant is there to help you create a ceremony that feels authentic and true to who you are.

For my part, I go one step further. Often, officiants use templates, which can mean the same wording is used in different ceremonies for registrars and religious officiants. I never do this, and everything I write will be only for you.

Your story is told your way and done so with unique and completely original words.

The Benefits of Hiring a Civil Celebrant
  1. Personalised Ceremonies: From the script to the music, we work with you to create a ceremony that truly represents your unique love story or life milestone.

  2. Flexibility in Location: Since civil celebrants are not legally bound to specific locations, we can perform your ceremony anywhere – be it a scenic outdoor spot, your home, or a favourite venue.

  3. Creative Touches: A celebrant can bring in fun and creative ideas, like symbolic rituals, custom readings, and unique traditions to make your ceremony stand out.

  4. Freedom of Belief: Whether you want a religious, spiritual, or secular ceremony, a celebrant will work with you to include what feels right for you – and leave out what doesn’t.

  5. Your take on tradition: Do you hate readings? Do long vows make your cringe? Or do you want to add more, more more!? We will add and subtract from the ceremony until we get to something that utilises only what you want to be there.

Basically put – there are no obligations! We’ll do it your way.

UK Celebrant Qualifications: Do They Need Them?

In the UK, there’s no legal requirement for celebrants to hold formal qualifications, meaning anyone can technically call themselves a celebrant—even without training!

However, most professional celebrants choose to invest in accredited training to refine their skills and deliver exceptional ceremonies. These courses often cover essential areas like creative scriptwriting, public speaking, and designing ceremonies that perfectly reflect each client’s unique story.

While formal qualifications aren’t mandatory, hiring a trained and experienced celebrant can make a significant difference in the quality of your special day. For example, I trained with *Civil Ceremonies Ltd.* and hold both a Level 3 Diploma in Couples and Naming Ceremonies and a Level 3 Diploma in Funeral Ceremonies. Additionally, I have a Master’s degree in Screenwriting from Falmouth University and a Bachelor’s in Performance from the University of South Wales.

Many celebrants also join respected professional bodies, such as the *Association of Independent Celebrants (AOIC)* and the *Celebrants Collective*. These organisations provide ongoing training opportunities and ensure celebrants adhere to high standards of service.

While celebrant qualifications aren’t a legal necessity, they’re a great way to ensure your celebrant is dedicated, skilled, and passionate about delivering an unforgettable, personalised experience for your special occasion.
