The Perfect Vows for Your Celebrant-Led Wedding Ceremony: Finding Your Unique Voice

Writer's picture: Marcus ArmstrongMarcus Armstrong

When it comes to crafting the perfect celebrant-led wedding ceremony, few moments are as impactful as the exchange of vows. It’s the heart of the ceremony, where two people stand before their loved ones and declare their commitment, love, and promises. As a celebrant in the UK, one of my favourite parts of the process is helping couples find their voice and choose the vow style that best tells their story. But with so many options available, where do you begin?

Let’s explore the different types of wedding vows, how they each help share your unique love story, and the emotional impact they bring to your ceremony. Along the way, I’ll share the pros and cons of each style to help guide your decision—because there’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to love!

1. Traditional Vows

Traditional vows are the classic, timeless promises you often hear at weddings. They’re usually short, sweet, and structured, with phrases like, “to have and to hold” and “for better or worse.” This can also be your “I do” or “I will” vows.

Why They Tell Your Story Best:Traditional vows can feel like an anchor, connecting your love story to a rich history of marriage and shared cultural values. They’re ideal if you want your ceremony to feel grounded in timeless romance. Plus, they’re familiar, which can make them comforting for couples and guests alike.

Pros:

  • Simple and elegant: Easy to remember and deliver.

  • Evoke a sense of tradition and continuity.

  • Perfect for couples who want to focus on the ritual of marriage itself.

Cons:

  • Less personal: They don’t offer much room for customization.

  • May not reflect the quirks and unique details of your relationship.

2. Writing your own vows

This is where your creativity and individuality shine. These are entirely bespoke, written by you (with or without a little help) to reflect your love story, values, and promises.

Why They Tell Your Story Best:Personal vows turn your ceremony into a narrative—your narrative. They allow you to weave in special memories, inside jokes, and heartfelt promises, creating a deeply emotional moment that feels entirely “you.”

Pros:

  • Uniquely yours: No two sets of personal vows are the same.

  • Deeply emotional: They often evoke tears, laughter, and a sense of intimacy.

  • Showcase your relationship: Great for highlighting shared values, milestones, and goals.

  • Diverse: they can take any form, be anything or be as serious or funny as you like!

Cons:

  • Can be nerve-wracking to write: Some couples find the process daunting.

  • Delivery pressure: Sharing such personal words in front of an audience might feel overwhelming.

3. Hybrid Vows

If you’re torn between tradition and personalisation, hybrid vows offer the best of both worlds. These start with a classic framework and allow room for personal touches or additions.

Why They Tell Your Story Best:Hybrid vows balance structure and individuality. They acknowledge the traditional elements of marriage while celebrating the unique details of your relationship.

Pros:

  • Versatile: Offers a mix of familiarity and creativity.

  • Easier to write: The traditional framework provides a starting point.

  • Can appeal to a wide audience, blending timelessness with personalisation.

Cons:

  • Might not fully satisfy purists on either side (traditionalists or creatives).

  • Balancing the two elements can be tricky without guidance.

4. Call-and-Response Vows

For couples who might feel nervous about writing or reading vows, call-and-response vows are a beautiful option. In this style, the celebrant reads each line, and the couple repeats it back.

Why They Tell Your Story Best:This style shifts the focus to the act of commitment itself, making it a shared moment of connection. It also allows the celebrant to craft language that reflects your love story while taking the pressure off you during the ceremony.

They can also be personalised really easily, taking the heart of what you want to say and structuring them in a wonderful and engaging way!

Pros:

  • Stress-free: No need to read or write vows.

  • Inclusive: Guests may feel more connected to the ceremony, especially if group responses are incorporated.

  • Celebrant-led: Ensures a smooth, heartfelt delivery.

Cons:

  • Less personal: May feel less intimate than vows you’ve written yourselves (though that’s an easy fix!)

  • Not so much detail: sometimes less is more, and sometimes more is more! That’s up to you, but these do prevent getting really into the story in detail.

5. Silent Vows

Silent vows are a unique and deeply intimate option. Instead of spoken words, the couple exchanges vows through a written letter, a shared look, or even a symbolic gesture. This can be combined with a signing or a gift-giving ceremony!

Why They Tell Your Story Best:Sometimes, words can’t capture the depth of your emotions. Silent vows allow for a moment of profound connection that feels almost sacred, with an emphasis on unspoken understanding.

Pros:

  • Intense emotional impact: Perfect for couples who feel more comfortable expressing emotions non-verbally.

  • Unique and memorable: A rare choice that guests are unlikely to forget.

  • Flexible: Can incorporate other symbolic elements, like lighting a unity candle or exchanging meaningful objects.

Cons:

  • May confuse guests if not explained clearly, though that’s for me to worry about!

  • Less traditional: Might feel unconventional to some couples or families.

6. Group Vows

Group vows involve participation from the guests, such as a community affirmation of support for your marriage or a moment where everyone speaks a shared promise.

Why They Tell Your Story Best:If your love story is deeply tied to your community, group vows emphasize the role your family and friends play in your journey. It’s a celebration of love that radiates outward.

Pros:

  • Community-focused: Involves and celebrates your loved ones.

  • Joyful energy: Creates a collective, uplifting moment.

  • Adds a unique touch to your ceremony.

Cons:

  • Less personal between the couple.

  • May require extra coordination to ensure smooth participation.
